I’ve had the pleasure of being in contact with Vancouver based author Jeremiah Ukponrefe about reviewing and promoting his upcoming Sci-Fi Dystopian novel Hive. I will be reviewing this book in early March I reviewed this book on March 5th, but we wanted to do something to promo this book before publication as well, so today’s post is an interview with Jeremiah. More information on the book has been included at the end of this post.
Before we continue with the interview, I just wanted to say that I was pleasantly surprised just now, tracking down the info I would need for the end of this post, to discover that Jeremiah is indeed based in Vancouver. I grew up just south of the big city in Langley! I’ve been in Newfoundland since 2012, but I still miss the mountains of BC, and while St. John’s shows its bones and has a fascinating history right there on the surface, I miss taking day trips into Canada’s third-largest city.
Interview with Jeremiah Ukponrefe
Describe yourself in 5 words or less.
Ambitious, Stoic, Hard-Working, Calm, Positive
What inspires you to write?
The love for the craft is the main reason. The second is creating something that I can say is my own. The third is out of the desire to do something with my life. I also really like passive income.
If any of your work were to be adapted to TV or film, which piece would it be and how do you see it being adapted?
Definently television. Hive is the first in The Arcane Volumes, a series of nine planned books. By the way that its going to go, the later books are going to be quite big, way to big to fit into a single movie. In terms of how it would be made, I would love to see adult animation, mostly because if it were live action the budget would have to be ridulously high, and I also don’t think Ive seen enough adult animation based on books.
Where and/or when do you do your best writing?
In my room at mid morning, within the ballpark of 8 am-11
Do you consider yourself a plotter, gardner, or a bit of both?
Definently a little bit of both. I always have the major plot points and charecter devolopment mapped out and as I write the details get filled in, as well as many of my original plot points change.
Tell us about a hobby or passion of yours outside of books and writing.
Before the pandemic I was also a standup comedian.
How much do you let your own life, heritage, etc. influence your writing?
I don’t really have personal experience fighting aliens so instad my writing comes from different phisophies I have.
