My Review
My Rating: 3 Stars
Consider liking my review on Goodreads.
Hive is a Sci-Fi Military Dystopian about humanity fighting back against the aliens who invaded and destroyed life as they knew it. The world Ukponrefe creates is gritty and post-apocalyptic in the best way, described just enough to visualize it and highlight the interesting new things the Hive introduced without stumbling into info-dumps that stall the plot. The storyline is clear, well thought out, and progresses at a steady pace. If you like military sci-fi, this book has all the hallmarks of a great sci-fi military plot and world.
I wish I had been able to connect with the main character, or any other character in this book. While it has all the bones needed for a good dystopian, there was no emotional connection to the characters, which left me uninvested in the human struggle and free to wonder if there might have been ways for the humans to live comfortably in this new world created by the Hive rather than rooting for them to tear it down.
I absolutely love the concept of the Hive, the alien species and their way of living. It definitely gives a nod to the Borg, but it’s unique enough in its own right and my favourite parts of the book were whenever the human characters took time to be curious about what they discovered on their way to destroy the Hive.
If military sci-fi is your thing, this book has military feel and action in spades and presents interesting technology and concepts to marvel at along the way. Check it out!
