Mara Keres. A trained warrior and former highly respected peacekeeper. Note “former.” Once, she had her life under control. Once, she had the trust of the galaxy.
Now she rots in the same prison she used to sentence people to. Solitary confinement for six years. Would’ve brought anyone else to their knees. Not her. Then an offer resurfaces, almost too good to be true.
Ghosts of her past and demons come back to haunt her. Will she ever make it out alive? Sometimes, facing your worst memories is worth the risk.

My Review
My Rating: 4 Stars

A disgraced soldier who used to defend criminals now bears the same title, having served six years in prison at this point. Mara is fierce, she’s angry, and with the help of some unlikely allies, she’s breaking out. This fast-paced novella is packed full of badass ladies, an epic prison break, and the making of a cyborg!
This novella was a lot of fun and leaves me quite optimistic about the future of the series. Mara’s story is far from over, and she doubtlessly has a lot of similar breakneck adventures to take us on! Will you join her?
My one concrete complaint is the way Mara’s accent is handled in dialogue. When it’s there, it’s too much. It slowed the reading experience and felt distracting. When it’s not there, it’s absolutely not there. She has a thick accent for a couple of pages and then drops it entirely for a few more. I’d much rather see hints of an accent sprinkled in here and there consistently but not overwhelmingly.
If you love space operas, read Mara’s Awakening!

This sounds like an intriguing read. I know what you mean about accents being a bit distracting – I have experienced this with a few audiobooks. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
