From: Her Alien Warrior
She lifted the bowl toward him, but he frowned and shook his head, repeating the word again and again.
Was he asking a question? Did he inquire about the crash? His ship? The family he left behind? The battle that raged for days above her home?
He could be asking anything. She sat there feeling helpless as he continued to repeat the sounds, urging her to understand him.
It was hopeless. Without the translator devices, there was no way to communicate with him. There was no way to make him understand her.
She released a small sigh, her gaze falling to her hands, which continued to grasp the bowl.
The alien didn’t give up. He reached for her hand, this time not grabbing it to stop her from leaving but offering it to her.
Thalassa glanced from his outstretched fingers to his face, wondering what he could mean to do. Hesitantly, she placed her hand on his. He wrapped strong digits around her fingers and tugged her gently to him. He placed her hand firmly on his chest, her fingers splayed against his warm, violet skin.
Heat flushed up her neck at the feel of his heart beating steadily beneath her fingertips.
Again, he spoke the word, imploring her to recognize the meaning.
His health? His heart? His life?
She closed her eyes in defeat, giving her head a little shake. This was going to take time. A long time.
Then his hand touched her chest, just beneath her throat.
Her eyes flashed open, and she stumbled back.
He grabbed her arm, steadying her so she didn’t fall.
“Zarick,” he said, again. “Zarick.”
He gestured to himself as he spoke the word.
“Zarick.” She tested the word on her. Not that it would help her understand him, but he seemed pleased with her effort. He nodded vigorously, his eyes alight with hope.
“Zarick.” Again, he gestured to his chest, patting himself there. Then he pointed to her, while he spoke something else. Other words that had no meaning to her.
A question?
“My name,” Thalassa said, understanding dawning within her. “You want to know my name.”
Not knowing what she said, he pointed again to himself, saying the strange word, then to her.
“Zarick,” she said, this time with more confidence.
He nodded, pointing to his chest. “Zarick.”
“That’s your name.” Her eyes widened, the bowl nearly slipping from her fingers as she stood stunned. “Zarick is your name.”
He was attempting to communicate. What better way than to start with their names?
She met his gaze, then pointed to herself. “Thalassa.”
Zarick eased back onto the pillows, resting his head comfortably as he stared. He pointed a weary hand at her.
“Thalassa,” he repeated, speaking her name slowly for the first time, struggling with the syllables. “Thalassa.” Then he gestured again to himself. “Zarick.”
He smiled.
The sight of his contented smile nearly undid her. He was an alien, quite different with his blue-violet skin and his slightly larger than human body, but he was an incredibly handsome alien.
When he smiled, her insides turned to mush. Her limbs grew wobbly. She attempted to return his smile but feared it resembled more of a grimace since her whole body shook with reaction to his conscious presence.
With him no longer struggling to make her understand him, she beat a hasty retreat.
At the doorway, he spoke her name again.
She turned to glance at him one more time.
“Shalokka, Thalassa.”
Thank you.
That was one word of the Eben language she already knew.
“You’re welcome,” she said, as she smiled gently, nodded her head, then left the room.
