Excerpt
A healthy mind is a grateful mind. There are a reason and purpose for all the things you are going through, good or bad. It’s often hard to see them when we are in the middle of the bad stuff, but if you can focus on the things in life that you are grateful for it makes the hard a little easier and the good feel great. When we can view a situation as happening for us and not to us, it helps keep our attitude more positive. “In everything give thanks” (KJV 1 Thes 5:18).
What to Avoid
To keep your mind healthy there are a couple of things you need to avoid. One of them is elevator people. No, I’m not talking about the doorman or those who ride up and down the elevator with you every morning. I mean those negative types that immediately take you to the bottom floor. Their words and actions do nothing but bring people down. These types of people are toxic to your growth and infect your mindset. Now you may say to me, what do I do if one of my family members or coworkers is an elevator person? Limit your contact with them. It is critical to stay away from constant negativity. This sounds harsh, but I have had to restrict contact with certain people for my own well-being. If you are an elevator person yourself, go back, reread and apply the lessons in this chapter.
Another source of constant negativity is the news. I never watch or read it. I can’t remember the last time I had the news on my television. The majority of it is untrue and rarely, if ever, do they put a positive spin on anything. For the most part, none of it even applies to my daily life, so I choose to avoid the extra negativity. I am certain that if something happens that will directly affect me, I will be informed in some way or another, without having to subject myself to all the negative things that don’t.
Stretch Yourself
Once you have incorporated the tips above into your life, you may find that you hit a plateau in your growth process. If you are not progressing and cannot figure out why, it may be because you have a misguided belief in one of the areas. For example, you may believe you forgave someone, but your words or actions do not support that. You may believe you have a positive attitude, but others may not see it that way.
This is where having input from others comes in. I recommend a coach, mentor or very trustworthy friend. Caution on the trustworthy friend though; they are often afraid to truly tell you what you need to hear. The job of the coach, mentor or friend is to help you see what you are not seeing. They are there to stretch you beyond your comfort zone. Ask them to hold you accountable for your goals and actions. They can guide you on a path to achieving what you want from life. Ask for honest feedback and ask often. The key here is to choose someone who has your best interests at heart. Most importantly, you must not take offence at the feedback they provide.
