The Baker Corp. has recruited Blair Sellick, a nationally known dog trainer with truly phenomenal skills, to provide exceptional training for service dogs. The project would provide highly intelligent animals as partners for victims of PTSD and other disabilities. Or would it?
The answer has disappeared along with Blair, her fellow dog trainers, and all the dogs.
Ex-SEAL and canine handler Zane Kelly is done with war, with dogs, and with Bolton’s Soldiers. Coerced, cajoled, and eventually intrigued, Zane finally capitulates to Bolton’s Soldiers recruiters for just one project, to find Blair Sellick. The mission is clear, the dog trainers are dying, and nobody has heard from Blair for weeks. Zane has failed only one mission, and that failure cost his canine partner Axel his life.
This time Zane has no intention of leaving anyone behind.

Easing himself onto the first rung, Zane glided up the ladder. The top half of his body cleared the companionway, and he immediately swept his gun around the deck. He halted when he located his target. The obscure figure sat on the far bench, legs stretched nearly the length of the bench and loosely crossed at the ankles. Not the typical posture of someone ready to attack, but Zane wasn’t known for taking things for granted. He targeted his weapon center mass.
“You’ve got exactly two seconds to give me a reason not to shoot you,” Zane threatened.
“You’re a hard man to find, Zane Kelly,” the faceless figure, backlit by the moon’s glow reflecting off the water, said in a slow, relaxed manner.
“You’re sitting here, so obviously not hard enough.” Zane had left the ranch and escaped to his boat for a reason. Christ almighty. Was nothing off limit? He flipped up the safety on his Sig with a pop of his thumb. “How the hell did you find me?”
“Jamie.”
“Son of a bitch, I knew telling him was a mistake,” Zane snapped as he cleared the companionway and stood on the deck. Jamie would get a good ass-chewing next time Zane spoke to him.
“Your brother is worried about you. Jamie told me you dropped off the radar weeks ago. He wasn’t sure you’d be here, but it was the only lead I had.” The man hadn’t so much as twitched, even with the gun still leveled at him.
That pissed off Zane even more. His lower jaw flexed and popped in and out, as if it had a mind of its own. He gripped his Sig so tightly his hand started to tingle. I don’t care who you are. One wrong move and you’ll be fresh chum.
“You can holster that damn thing. I’m not the enemy.”
“Says you.” Zane grunted. He lowered the weapon but didn’t holster it. Where exactly did one put a loaded Sig when all you were wearing was your boxers? Note to self, be sure to add an ankle holster under the mattress.
Zane recognized the intruder’s voice the first time he spoke. Nevertheless, he was so steamed that his brother outed him, he made certain the intruder got the point. “I’m in no mood to play twenty questions. Spit it out, Rob. Why the hell are you on my boat?”
“I’m here because I need your expertise. It’s urgent or believe me I wouldn’t have bothered,” Rob said.
